Voluntary Board Appointment
The North Highland Initiative (NHI) is seeking to appoint a Non-Executive Director (Trustee) to join its Board.
NHI is a place-based charity dedicated to strengthening the economic, social and environmental resilience of the North Highlands of Scotland. Working with communities, businesses and public bodies, NHI supports sustainable rural development across areas including enterprise, skills, housing, land use and environmental stewardship. This voluntary role offers an opportunity to contribute strategically to the future of one of Scotland’s most distinctive rural regions.
The Role
As a Trustee, you will help provide strategic leadership, oversight and governance, ensuring NHI delivers its mission effectively and sustainably.
Key responsibilities include:
• Contributing to the organisation’s strategy and priorities
• Ensuring strong governance, financial stewardship and risk management
• Providing independent judgement and constructive challenge
• Acting as an ambassador for NHI with partners, stakeholders and funders
• Supporting the Chair and Board in maintaining an effective and diverse board
Person Specification
We are particularly interested in candidates with senior business or leadership experience and a strong connection to the North Highlands.
Essential:
• Senior leadership or board-level experience
• Strong strategic thinking and judgement
• Understanding of good governance (or willingness to learn)
• Commitment to NHI’s purpose and values
• Ability to collaborate, challenge constructively and contribute effectively
Desirable:
• Experience in sectors such as rural development, land management, energy, housing, finance, infrastructure, tourism, food and drink, or environmental sustainability
• Previous non-executive or trustee experience
• Experience working with rural or remote communities
Time Commitment
• 4–6 board meetings per year (primarily in the Highlands, some online)
• Preparation and occasional participation in sub-committees, strategy session or stakeholder events
Approximate commitment: 1–2 days per month
Term
Initial three-year appointment, with the possibility of re-appointment.
