Ben Loyal
One for the more experienced hillwalker, but well worth the extra effort
Rising to 804 metres, Ben Loyal is a striking Corbett in the far north of Sutherland, often referred to as the “Queen of Scottish Mountains.” Its jagged granite peaks dominate the skyline above the Kyle of Tongue and the vast Flow Country, offering a dramatic and rewarding climb for experienced hillwalkers.
The most popular route begins at Ribigill Farm, just south of Tongue, following a track that quickly gives way to boggy and pathless terrain. The ascent is steep and includes minor scrambling, especially near the summit tors. The highest point, An Caisteal, crowns the ridge and offers almost infinite 360-degree views across North Sutherland’s lochans, moorlands, and distant mountains.
Though not the tallest peak in the region, Ben Loyal’s isolated position and distinctive profile make it one of Scotland’s most memorable climbs.
