Castletown to John O’Groats Coastal Ride
Cycle Trail: Distance: 20 miles (32 km) one way Grade: Moderate
Set off from Castletown, heading east along quiet coastal roads with open views across farmland and sea. The route leads you past rolling fields to Mey, where you can stop to admire the striking Castle of Mey, once the Queen Mother’s summer residence.
Continue eastward towards Gills Bay, passing rugged coastline and catching glimpses of the Orkney Isles across the Pentland Firth. From Gills Bay, follow the road northeast to reach the iconic destination of John O’Groats, a bustling landmark for end-to-end cyclists with shops, cafés, and spectacular sea views. For some really spectacular views, continue on the short hike to see the Duncansby Stacks to take some amazing photos.
This one-way route covers around 20 miles (32 km) and is relatively gentle, with light traffic and a mix of coastline, culture, and wide northern skies—perfect for a relaxed day ride.
