Stretching for over two miles between Dunnet Head and Castletown, Dunnet Beach is a long sweeping expanse of sand in the North Highlands. It's a firm local favourite for newbie surfers, wild swimmers, families and dog walkers. With vast open skies, rolling dunes, and panoramic views across the Pentland Firth to this expansive beach is popular year-round offering something different in each season.
In the summer, the shallow water and soft golden sand make it a safe spot for paddling and beach games. You’ll often see horses galloping along on the beach here or windsurfers on wilder days. The walks through the grassy dune system are great for spotting wildflowers and the views from the top are breath-taking. Keep on the lookout for seabirds, seals, and even the occasional orca sighting off the coast.
There is a car park with direct beach access, public toilets and a small campsite close by. The village of Dunnet has a hotel and local attractions, including the Mary-Ann’s Cottage museum and Dunnet Bay Distillery.
There is also carpark located at the east end of the beach Castlehill in Castletown, where the shingle beach and rock pools are great for beachcombing and rock pooling. In Castletown there are local shops, hotel, public toilets and a welcoming heritage centre where you can learn about Castletown’s flagstone and cultural heritage.
