Dunnet Community Forest

Just along from Dunnet Bay, Dunnet Forest is Scotland’s most northerly community woodland, managed by the Dunnet Forestry Trust since 2003. Formerly planted in the 1950s to test forestry on poor soils, it now thrives with a diverse mix of conifers and native broadleaves. The forest is home to lots of interesting features. Explore the maze of paths and you never know what you may find! There are trails to suit all-abilities, from  even paths with hard surfaces and takeing you through woodland and meadow areas to more challenging trails, cycle trails and horse trails. Dunnet forrest is a family favourite with lots to see and do along the way  – look out for the Log Cabin, perfect for rainy day picnics. There are play areas,  sculptures, a bird hide, ponds and giant xylophone. So there is always something new to discover.

The forest is open to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. The main access point to the forest is from the public car park. Pedestrian, bicycle and horse access is also available at the works access point near the Dunnet campsite.

Explore the Forest

Waymarked trails (all-abilities & circular routes): Choose from red or yellow paths, or tackle the full circular walk (~4 km/2.5 miles, 45 m ascent; mostly stone-surfaced and suitable for most abilities)

Activity zones: Family, Quiet, and Active areas feature great amenities like a log cabin, giant wooden xylophone, sculptures, picnic benches, and a bird hide. There is a cycle trail too.

Community-Led & Sustainable

Owned by the Dunnet Forestry Trust since 2021 and benefits from volunteer efforts in conservation, woodland management, and skills development.

There are plenty of ways to join in with the forestry management  as a volunteer, including at the weekly ‘green gym’.

The Dunnet Community Forest volunteers are actively involved with the management of the forest at all levels. They work alongside one part time forester to achieve the management plan and the Trust’s mission statement.

Monthly firewood, logs, woodchip, and kindling sales support both the community and sustainable forestry practices
