Falls of Shin
The waterfalls at Shin would be spectacular on their own, but the sight of leaping salmon makes them even more special. The Falls of Shin are one of the best places in all of Scotland to watch leaping Atlantic Salmon, and these incredible fish can be seen anytime between May and November, with the late summer months offering the best viewing opportunities.
As well as the Falls, the area also has a well-maintained path network leading down to the falls viewing platform, as and there are 4 marked woodland walks of various difficulty.
There is also an onsite visitor centre with a café, as well as a picnic area and outdoor play park.
Useful to know
- Getting There & Parking: Falls of Shin is located near Lairg in Sutherland, easily accessible by car along the winding road through Achany Glen. There is on-site parking at the visitor centre.
- Family-Friendly Destination: Kids will love the outdoor playpark and space to roam.
- Time Your Visit for Salmon Watching: The Falls are great to visit all year round but May to November, with late summer (July to September) offering the highest chance of seeing leaping Atlantic salmon. Visit during or just after rainfall, when the river levels are higher as this increases salmon activity.
- Don’t Forget to Bring your Camera: The falls themselves are stunning, and capturing a leaping salmon on camera is a real treat. Early morning or late afternoon often provides the best lighting for photos.
- Fury Friends: Dogs are welcome on leads, particularly around the café and trail areas.
- Public Toilets: There are toilets within the visitors centre and you’ll also find public toilets and more places to eat in Bonar Bridge and Lairg.
