The Flagstone Trail – Walk Through Caithness’s Industrial Past

Explore the legacy of Caithness’s world-famous flagstone industry on the Flagstone Trail in Castletown. This scenic and informative walk takes you through the heart of Castlehill, once a bustling hub of quarrying and stone-cutting. Follow the path from the old windmill—once used to power saws—to the historic harbour where flagstones were shipped across the globe.

Interpretive panels along the trail tell the story of how Caithness sandstone, formed 370 million years ago, became a prized building material. The walk also includes a coastal section with dramatic sea views and a woodland sculpture trail that adds a creative twist to the experience.

Originally built to protect the northern approaches to Scapa Flow, the Battery housed anti-aircraft guns and searchlights, manned by personnel from nearby RAF Castletown.

Today, the site offers a peaceful spot to reflect on its military past while enjoying panoramic views over Dunnet Bay. Interpretive signage shares stories of wartime life and the importance of Castletown in defending Britain’s northern waters.
