This short circular route is a real hidden gem in the heart of Assynt. This trail takes you to the historic (and almost magical) Bone Caves, nestled in the cliffsides of Creag nan Uamh (Crag of the Caves).
These 4 limestone caves are not only spectacular to the eye but also hold lots of interesting history for any archaeological buffs or speleologists. It’s believed the caves were used by hunters some 8000 years ago, and the remains of arctic animals including polar bears, reindeer, lemmings, wild horses, wolves and lynx have even been discovered here. A real insight into the historical species of Assynt.
This circuit has a clear path (although this can be narrow at times), so is suitable for the whole family. The Bone Caves make for a great adventure for any young explorers looking to learn more about the ancient beasts that once roamed this vast and wild area.
