Keiss Castle to Nybster Broch Coastal Walk
A journey through time and clifftop beauty
Embark on one of Caithness’s most scenic and historically rich walks along the rugged coastline between Keiss Castle and Nybster Broch. This 5.5 km (3.5 mile) route is part of the John o’Groats Trail, offering dramatic sea views, ancient ruins, and a deep connection to Scotland’s past.
Starting at Nybster Broch, a prominent Iron Age site perched on a coastal promontory, the trail winds southward along grassy paths and cliff edges. Along the way, you’ll pass rocky inlets, nesting seabirds, and remnants of wartime defences. The walk culminates at the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Keiss Castle, a 16th-century tower house dramatically positioned above Sinclair’s Bay.
This walk is perfect for history lovers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers seeking a blend of archaeology and wild coastal scenery. It can be extended with a visit to the Caithness Broch Centre in nearby Auckengill for deeper insight into the region’s prehistoric heritage.
