Melvich Beach

Tucked beneath low grassy cliffs, Melvich is a stunning and unspoilt stretch of golden sands at the mouth of the River Halladale, enclosed by the pier at Portskerra to the west and the rocky headland cliffs below Rubha an Tuir to the east.

A small car park is located down a signed track from the main road through the village, offering pretty views over Big House Lodge. It’s a short walk through the marram grass dunes to reach the sheltered beach. This is a brilliant spot for a peaceful stroll, paddling, picnics, or catching waves, it’s popular with surfers thanks to its consistent swell, but watch out for Rip currents when the river. If you are lucky you might see salmon jumping at the river mouth or seals bobbing their heads.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the beach, the village of Melvich offers a range of handy local amenities, including public toilets, a café, shop, and post office, as well as the Halladale Inn, which has camping, glamping, a restaurant, and a friendly bar.
