Morven, Maiden Pap and Scaraben

Embark on one of Caithness’s most iconic hill walks, taking in the dramatic Maiden Pap and the towering Morven, whilst observing the rugged ridge of Scaraben.

This route offers wild, remote landscapes, sweeping views over Flow Country, and a true sense of adventure. From the summit at Morven in clear conditions, views of Ben Hope to the north west and the Cairngorms are visible.

  • Distance: 18–20 km.
  • Duration: 7–8 hours (summer conditions).
  • Grade: Strenuous – boggy moorland, steep rocky ascents, and faint paths.
  • Conditions: Possible to be wet underfoot in some sections all year round.
  • Navigation: GPS and map essential.
  • Start Point: Braemore (parking near A9 layby).
  • Gear: Full hill kit, food, water needed. No facilities en route.
  • Best Season: Late spring to early autumn for longer daylight.
