Strathnaver Museum is now open for visitors again after an exciting refurbishment! Just a short walk from the white sandy beach at Farr Bay you will find a hidden gem of a Museum housed in the former parish church of St Columba. Laid out within its unassuming walls is a treasure trove of unusual objects and gripping stories all presented by a friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer staff.

Located in the former Parish Church of Farr, this impressive community museum delves into the fascinating story of 8,000 years of human occupation in north-west Sutherland. Discover more about the story of the people, their culture, and the landscape that surrounds us in the context of the brutal early 19th century Highland Clearances.

Its eclectic collection includes an intact Bronze Age burial beaker, early 19th century croft house display, militaria, Clan Mackay memorabilia, and contemporary art.

The ‘Museum Annex’ explores the agricultural and fishing heritage of the area using innovative digital labels help visitors to explore the objects on display.

A must see for all those of Mackay descent, or just those wishing to learn more about the Scottish clan system, is the Mackay Centre located on the first floor.

The Museum is on 3 trails; the Pictish Trail, Strathnaver Trail and Rob Donn Trail. More information, and maps / leaflets, available on site and on our website.

Accessibility

We are partially accessible. The new annex building is fully accessible with accessible toilet and access. The ground floor in the main building is fully accessible but the first floor is not. Although we will accommodate visitors as much as we can by taking objects of interest to users who can’t access the top floor and through digital means.
