Thurso to Dunnet Head Loop

Cycle Route: Distance: 28 miles (45 km) Grade: Moderate

This scenic loop begins in the coastal town of Thurso, heading east out of town via Mount Pleasant Road, a quieter alternative to the main route. Follow this road towards Castletown, a peaceful village known for its flagstone heritage and charming harbour.

From Castletown, continue northeast on minor coastal roads towards Dunnet Head, the northernmost point of mainland Britain. The steady climb to the Dunnet Head Lighthouse offers panoramic views over the Pentland Firth and, on a clear day, the Orkney Islands.

After enjoying the viewpoint, descend to the village of Dunnet, where you can stop at the wide sandy beach or explore the local distillery. The return leg follows the main road west back into Thurso, completing a roughly 30-mile (48 km) loop with a mix of gentle climbs, dramatic coastal views, and quiet countryside riding.
