Wick to Whaligoe Steps and Lybster
Cycle Trail: Distance: 30 miles (48 km) return Grade: Moderate
Start your ride in Wick, heading south along the A99 towards Thrumster, a small village surrounded by open Caithness countryside. Continue on the A99 for a short distance before turning off to visit the dramatic Whaligoe Steps — a steep, historic staircase carved into the cliffs leading to a once-bustling fishing harbour. Take care descending and enjoy the stunning coastal views.
From Whaligoe, cyclists can optionally continue south to the village of Lybster, where cafés and a small harbour offer a pleasant rest stop. The return journey can follow the same route north along the A99 or, for a quieter inland alternative, loop back via Occumster and Thrumster, using minor country roads.
The full route offers a rewarding ride of around 20–30 miles (32–48 km), with gentle hills, rugged coastal scenery, and a glimpse into Caithness’s fishing past.
Highlights: Whaligoe Steps, sea cliffs, harbours, coastal scenery
